S&P Global Ratings Launches Risk Framework for DeFi Vaults
S&P Global Ratings introduced its Vault Risk Assessment tool to bring independent risk transparency to onchain digital asset investment vehicles.
S&P Global Ratings unveiled a new analytical framework on Monday designed to evaluate risk in decentralized finance, marking a significant expansion of the credit rating giant's footprint in the digital asset sector. The Vault Risk Assessment, or VRA, targets onchain investment vehicles and aims to deliver independent risk transparency to a market that has historically lacked standardized evaluation tools.
The launch was announced from Singapore, underscoring the Asia-Pacific region's growing centrality to institutional digital asset activity. S&P Global, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SPGI, positioned the VRA as a complement to its broader suite of offerings across the DeFi space, extending the firm's analytical reach beyond traditional fixed-income and equity markets.

The move reflects mounting institutional demand for credible, third-party risk assessment in decentralized finance, where the absence of conventional disclosure requirements has made due diligence challenging for asset managers and institutional investors. By applying a structured assessment methodology to vault-style products, S&P Global is effectively importing legacy financial infrastructure norms into an emerging asset class.
The VRA launch signals that major incumbent rating agencies view DeFi not as a fringe market but as a segment requiring — and capable of supporting — formal risk evaluation. Analysts expect that frameworks of this kind could accelerate institutional capital allocation to onchain products by reducing informational asymmetry between protocol developers and large investors.
